Vehicle oil pump heart of lubrication system

OIL PUMP STC's automotive oil pumps are ideal for commercial passenger, light-duty, heavy-duty and off-highway vehicles
Comprising a broad product offering of oil pumps, timing belt tensioners and idlers, timing chain kits and related components, wheel bearing kits, Micro-V belt tensioners and idlers, the Shimizu Timing Components (STC) – automotive aftermarket house brand of Universal Parts Group (UPG) – range is available throughout Southern Africa, with distribution recently extended into Europe, through UPG UK and Ireland.
The STC brand of replacement parts was established in South Africa in 1983 and evolves to meet advances in engine design to ensure safety, reliability and long service for passenger, light commercial, heavy-duty and off-highway vehicles.
“What differentiates the STC range is the attention to bearing selection, radial clearances and internal tolerances, as well as the use of high-temperature lubricants and seals to support durability and service life in demanding applications . . . All STC components are manufactured using premium quality materials to ensure compliance with stringent [original-equipment manufacturer (OEM)] specifications. These components incorporate cast aluminium housings, precision-machined steel internals and temperature-rated sealing systems selected to withstand sustained thermal and load conditions,” says UPG CEO John Black.
He notes that oil pumps are a critical component in any internal combustion engine. As a positive displacement system, the pump circulates lubricating oil to rotating and reciprocating components, maintaining hydrodynamic film separation, reducing friction and managing operating temperatures. “Failure of this component can result in rapid mechanical damage and engine seizure. For this reason, dimensional accuracy, internal clearances and material integrity are critical to long-term performance”.
Further, Black comments that, as automotive technology advances, so do lubrication systems, and while many vehicles rely on mechanically driven gear-type pumps, modern engines integrate high-efficiency rotor pumps, often within the front engine cover assembly.
“Increasingly, electronically controlled oil pump systems are used to regulate pressure dynamically to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The STC portfolio is suitable for both conventional and modern configurations, enabling independent workshops and fleet operators to source OEM-compliant replacement units that ensure compatibility and reliability.”
STC oil pumps are engineered to meet specific engine configurations, covering both gear-type and rotor-type designs. Gear pumps use two intermeshing gears to generate controlled vacuum and pressure cycles, ensuring stable oil delivery across different engine speeds.
Rotor pumps incorporate a precision inner driven gear and outer rotor assembly to deliver smooth, efficient flow in compact modern engine layouts. Both configurations are designed to maintain consistent volumetric output under defined pressure parameters.
In Southern Africa, UPG supplies the STC range through established automotive spares dealers, supported by consolidated distribution centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gqeberha and Durban. These facilities operate integrated inventory and dispatch systems to maintain stock availability and consistent lead times.
Other quality brands include Gates, Europart, Timken, NTN, MRK, NSK, Tirsan, Gomet, Pivotal and Walterscheid, as well as APG and Spicer.
UPG – comprising Autobax, Driveshaft Parts and Agri Parts Global – continues to expand its product range and solutions offering, to meet growing demand for quality components and dependable technical support in Southern Africa and parts of Europe.
